"A haven amidst fertile vineyards and olive groves; savour Le Fontanelle’s intimate charm and panoramic views of the rolling Tuscan hillside, a dreamy setting for the most romantic of celebrations."
Situated in the heart of Italy’s Chianti region this authentically rural thirteenth-century estate is synonymous with the Tuscan chic that Italy is renowned for. A rustic stone’s throw from Sienna, you are poised to discover the treasures that the Italian Renaissance has on offer; whilst the grounds of the hotel offer majestic views of the surrounding countryside. Hotel Le Fontanelle is a haven amidst fertile vineyards and olive groves. Here you and your wedding guests can experience not only the views but also the delicious produce of the valley of Chianti Classico.
Think of this as a rural Spa retreat: with a wedding to add the wow factor. Lovingly renovated with seamless Tuscan style, the hotel is the eponymous hero of an ancient estate that takes its heritage from the stones used to collect spring water years ago. Cleverly, this ancient charm does not detract from the needs of the sophisticated traveller. Warm, welcoming, relaxing and inviting this is the perfect wedding venue for those at one with the oxymoron of classic modernity.
With its private setting and intimate charm the hotel is the perfect place for a flawless celebration. Say your vows in front of guests and panoramic views of the valley on the Terrazza Belvedere, a dreamy setting for the most romantic of celebrations. The staff here are only too happy to accommodate your hopes and dreams, just say the word and they will become reality.
With a choice of two prestigious dining venues you have a difficult choice to make. La Colonna is the hotel’s delightful indoor restaurant, with a warm intimate atmosphere and the capacity to entertain 50 diners. Join your guests as you surround the ancient column in the centre of the room forming a circle of friends and family to signify the eternity of your marriage. During the summer months you can also opt for the fresh air of the Belvedere Terrace as you dine under the moonlight of the region. Whatever you decide, the typical Italian fare will excite your taste-buds and the hotel’s sommelier will be on hand to help you flow tastefully towards the night time festivities.
Hotel Le Fontanelle boasts 25 rooms in five different styles. Whether you wish to gaze out over the pool, vineyard or forest all are authentically simple yet stylish with the luxuries that you would expect in such exclusive surroundings. Guests can take advantage of the local countryside by biking or hiking through the exquisite landscape. For those who prefer a more sedentary activity wine and food tours are on offer. Or why not indulge your senses in the hotel’s pools, Jacuzzi or Turkish bath – a more tranquil way to take in the striking scenery.
Italy’s Tuscany region is beautiful in all four seasons, however many venues and hotels close during the winter months for yearly refurbishment works when tourism is particularly low. The spring months during April-May can offer pleasant temperatures in the low 20’s, blue skies and bountiful spring blooms, but rainy days are also inevitable. The summer months of June-August bring long hot summer days and warm evenings, perfect for al fresco dining. The autumn is the perfect time to host an intimate dinner celebration by open fires and views across the vineyards with their turning gold and red leaves.
As with many wedding venues in Italy, most do not have a permit to carry out legal civil or religious ceremonies on their grounds. Instead it is usual to hold a legally binding civil ceremony at the local town hall or a religious ceremony at a local church (the nearby town of Castelnuovo Berardenga has a number of churches and a town hall or Siena has a beautiful town hall). The wedding celebrations and a blessing if requested can then take place at the actual venue.
The following information is for guidance purposes only and will differ according to your nationality. To legally wed in Italy you will need to contact the local comune (town hall) before making any plans to find out about local marriage laws, including what documents you’ll need. You will need to get a certificate of no impediment (CNI) from the authorities in the UK to prove you’re allowed to marry. Your partner will need to follow the same process to get their own CNI. You can normally get a CNI by giving a notice of marriage at your local register office or registrar in the UK. A CNI issued in England, Wales or Northern Ireland is valid for 6 months. A CNI issued in Scotland is valid for 3 months. They’ll post your notice, and as long as nobody has registered an objection after a specified number of days (normally 15 or 21), they’ll issue your CNI.
While you’re waiting for your CNI, you and your partner will need to make a statutory declaration before a solicitor or public notary. The Italian authorities will need this in addition to your CNI.
You’ll need to get your statutory declaration and CNI ‘legalised’ (certified as genuine) by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO). You’ll also need to get your CNI translated and sworn before the Italian courts or an Italian Justice of the Peace.
The names on all documents you provide must appear exactly as they do on your passports - if not, the authorities may refuse to allow the marriage to go ahead. You may need to provide evidence if the name on your passport is different to your birth certificate (eg marriage certificate or deed poll).
You can deposit your marriage certificate at the General Register Office (GRO) in the UK for safe-keeping after your wedding - this isn’t a legal requirement. Check with the commune to see if they can issue a multilingual marriage certificate for you after the ceremony. If not, the certificate will have to be translated into English.
Please note that at the current time of writing same sex marriages are not officially recognized in Italy.
